I am drawn to the accumulated marks and defects that occur over time both within nature and within the objects that surround us: crevices and ruptures in boulders and ancient ruins, patinas that develop on aged surfaces, cracks in pavement, to name a few. A closer look at what is usually considered damage reveals a unique history. It signals that something has lived, changed and weathered storms.
Using both additive and subtractive processes, my paintings consist of multiple layers, each worked to both cover and reveal what has occurred previously. They are an accumulation of texture and converging line searching for balance. Visual contrasts emerge and co-exist: chaos and order, definition and ambiguous expanses, separation and merger. As they evolve and unfold they offer a glimpse into their past. They are the sum of all that has come before and an exploration of how layered complexities of experience and the imperfections that arise can create depth and offer meaning - as they do in our own lives and psyches.
